Why Sunglasses are important for the Eye Health

According to research, in 2021, the hole in the ozone layer is larger than usual and is bigger than Antarctica. Antarctica is the icy continent at the south pole, which is the fifth largest continent, nearly twice the size of Australia.

You know what that means?

It means that more than ever, we are exposed to increased ultra violet radiation which causes skin cancers, some eye illness especially cataracts.

REASONS TO PURCHASE AND WEAR SUNGLASSES

Apart from wearing sunglasses as fashion accessory, here are reasons you should purchase or own sunglasses:

 Protection against certain elements

Sunglasses  could make a difference between having an enjoyable outdoor adventure and damaging your eyes, whether you are skiing down a mountain or biking along a dirt road. Sand, wind and dust can all irritate your eyes or scratch the cornea, sometimes causing permanent damage.

Have you ever had sand in your eye before? You’d agree with us that it can be very painful and this is dangerous because these tiny grain of sand can actually scratch your eye and can cause permanent damage.

Also, spending time in the snow can be very damaging to your eyes. Snow reflects 80% of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun  and can cause a condition known as snow blindness, where glare from the sun actually burns the cornea.

Wearing sunglasses that fully cover your eyes is the best way to keep your eyes safe from the elements.

Prevention of sun related eye diseases

Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultra violet(UV) rays  can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium.

Cataract involves a clouding of the eye’s lens that are triggered by UV exposure. The World Health Organization reports that, worldwide, approximately 900,000 people are blind because of cataract.

For macular degeneration, overtime UV light may play a role in damaging the macula lutea(an area of the eye with millions of light-sensing cells, which allow us to see fine details clearly), potentially leading to blurriness and vision loss.

Pterygium is the abnormal growth of tissue, also called surfer’s eye, may progress slowly from either corner across the white part of the eye, possibly leading to inflammation or disturbance of vision.

Wearing sunglasses that have UV protection can help protect against these conditions, keeping your eyes healthier.

Cuts down major triggers to headache and migraines

For many people who regularly get migraines or bad headache, bright sunlight can be a major trigger. Wearing sunglasses allows you to soak  up the sun without risking extreme pain and discomfort.

Protection against skin cancer

The  skin around the eyes, including the eyelids is very sensitive to sunlight.  Up to 10% of all skin cancers are found on the eyelid. So sunglasses will not only protect your eyes but the skin around your eye.

With Sunglasses, you can enjoy quality view.

in addition to your eye health, sunglasses helps you see better in bright light. They cut down glare and improve the colors and contrast of your view. Even when you are out  fishing, you’ll also be able to see past the surface of water more easily without that bright, reflective glare.

Sunglasses can also be worn to hide behind them to avoid eye contact or to appear cool or stay anonymous.

There is no such thing as too many sunglasses, just make sure that when you wear, it’s for a good reason.

RECOMMENDED SUNGLASSES

I recommend sunglasses with ultra violet protection and photochromic lenses, which serve as both prescription lens and sunglasses because they darken when exposed to ultra violet rays.
